The U.S. Mint has begun production of the highly anticipated modern version of the Double Eagle Gold Coin designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. Saint-Gaudens' original sculpture was intended to be a high-relief coin, but the coin minting technology in 1907 was not able to produce the coins as intended.
Acording to the U.S. Mint, they were able to use new technology to digitally scan the original Saint-Gaudens' coin plasters.
The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin is made pure 24-karat gold. Many gold coins are minted in 22-karat (90% gold), which is a harder alloy than pure gold, which allows coins to resist scratches and dings. Since the pure gold is softer and more malluable, it will make the high releaf strike possible.
As with all Bullion Coins produced by the U.S. Mint, they will be availble through approved vendors while the supply lasts.
