American Eagle gold bullion coins were first minted and released by the U.S. Mint in 1986 in four denominations of "legal tender".
Because of the high demand for gold, the U.S. mint notified authorized dealers on October 6, 2008 that certain Gold American Eagles would no longer be produced in 2008 saying: "Due to the extreme fluctuating market conditions for 2008, as well as current market conditions, gold and silver demand is unprecedented and the demand for platinum is unusually high".
