Small Cents
The U.S. Mint began producing the first version of Small Cents in 1857. The change from the Large Cent and Half Cent coins was primarily due to the cost of producing these larger coins. There was also the motivation to move away from the English coinage system, which the Large Cents were based and start using the U.S. decimal system.
Small Cents include:
Flying Eagle Cent (1857-1858)
"Indian Head" Cent (Penny) (1859 -1909)
Lincoln "Wheat Ear" Penny (1909-1958)
Lincoln Memorial Penny (1958-2008)
Lincoln Bicentennial Penny (2009-?)
